Airbus will build new generation satellite for Eutelsat

Updated: Nov 28, 2018

Airbus has been selected by Eutelsat to build two new-generation Hotbird telecommunication satellites. Eutelsat becomes the launch customer for the Eurostar Neo.

Sattelite market is going down these past years. There were 20 to 25 command in 2010 while there are only 8 in 2017 and probably not much in 2018. As other main competitors, Boeing, Loral or Thales Alenia Space, the European giant need now new orders. This two satellites orders from the European sattelite operator Eutelsat is a breath of fresh air as Airbus DS didn't received any command since 2018 started.

Thanks to this contract, Airbus DS overpass its competitors in term of number of command in 2018 as Thales Alenia Space only had on for its Konnect VHTS. Goal of this cnew project is to replace the current Hot bird spacecraft and enhance capacity at Eutelsat’s broadcasting position 13° East.

"The Hotbird fleet forms one of the largest broadcasting systems in Europe, broadcasting 1,000 television channels to more than 135 million homes in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East."

The development of Airbus’ Eurostar Neo platform has been supported by the European Space Agency (ESA) and space agencies across Europe in the framework of the ARTES-14 programme line led by ESA and CNES, and strongly supported by the UK Space Agency.
